Do you remember the old fairy tale, Sleeping Beauty?

It tells the story of a young princess who is cursed to fall into a deep sleep for 100 years, until she is one day awakened by a true love’s kiss.

Sleep curses are surprisingly common in old stories.

And you already know why:

Since time immemorial, thousands of years before these tales were first written down, people have been afflicted with real-life sleep curses.

Sleep curses like:

  • Neck, Back, or Shoulder Pain — when you wake up in the morning, and it feels like you’ve been trampled by a heard of elephants
  • Sleep Apnea — when your breathing gets cut off multiple times during the night, and you keep waking up choking or feeling faint
  • Insomnia — when you can’t get to sleep, even though you feel exhausted, and you lie awake for hours staring at the ceiling
  • Interrupted Sleep — when you spend the night tossing and turning, and get woken by the smallest thing, sometimes 9-12+ times per night
  • Snoring — when your airway gets constricted while you sleep, causing your throat to make a loud, awful, incessant sound as air passes

How do you break these sleep curses?

By understanding, and treating, their underlying causes.

As we saw a few days ago, for most people, the underlying cause of their snoring is that their airway becomes “kinked”, just like a garden hose. Why? Because they sleep on a pillow that has their neck sitting at a funny angle.

They can reduce snoring, and sometimes even stop it completely, by using a pillow that has just the right height and firmness to keep their neck straight.

Sleep apnea too is often aggravated, sometimes even caused, by sleeping on a pillow that doesn’t support your neck in its natural posture, and so constricts your trachea and makes it more difficult for you to breathe while sleeping.

What about insomnia?

There are many reasons why a person might struggle to sleep, some of which are easy to change and some of which are not. However, one thing is for sure: in that moment when you first lay your head down for the night, if you’re not in perfect comfort, you’re making in harder for your body to fall asleep.

Next time you can’t sleep, and you find yourself staring at the ceiling, ask yourself: “How comfortable do I feel, physically, on a scale of 1-10?”

If it’s not a “9” or a “10”, it means your body is literally under strain, and it could be one of the main reasons you’re struggling to fall asleep.

The same thing applies for interrupted sleep. When your mind and body are truly resting, you can often sleep through noise, changes in temperature, and even bodily needs. (Most people manage to do this no problem.)

What about soreness in the neck, back, or shoulders?

In most cases, it’s almost always caused by sleeping in a position that has your head, neck, and back out of alignment, even by just a few degrees. This puts strain on your spine, creating tension in your body. Now, imagine that tension for 6-8 hours uninterrupted. Is it any wonder you wake up sore?

So, there you are — five common sleep curses, and how to solve them.

And, for a lot of people, the easiest and most reliable way is to throw out their old pillow and replace it with a Custom Tailored Pillow.
