We all know the old story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Once upon a time, a little girl named Goldilocks was walking through a snowy forest in the winter, when she happened upon an old wooden house.

She knocks, but no one answers.

So, rather presumptuously, she just walks inside.

At the table are three bowls of porridge. Goldilocks was hungry, and it was cold outside, so she decided to help herself. She sat in front of the first bowl, and took a spoon of porridge to her lips. But it was too hot! So, she spat it out. She tasted the porridge from the second bowl, and it was cold and miserable. But the last bowl? “Ahh… this porridge is just right.”

So, she ate it all.

After eating so much porridge, she now felt tired.

So, Goldilocks walked into the sitting room and found three chairs. She tried to sit on the first one, but it was too high up and her feet couldn’t even touch the ground. When she tried to sit in the second chair, it was too low and her knees were in front of her face. But the last chair was just the right size!

After ten minutes or so, Goldilocks started to feel drowsy.

She saw some stairs and, sure enough, they lead to a bedroom with three beds laid up against the wall. At first, she tried to sleep on the first bed, but it was too hard. And the second bed was too soft. But the third was just right.

Goldilocks fell asleep seconds after her head touched the pillow.

And she slept like a baby.

Until three angry bears burst through the door — demanding to know who had eaten their porridge, and who had been sitting in their chairs!

This story is old.

Yet, even in the age of Facebook and smartphones, it still resonates with all of us. Why? Because it expresses a deep truth about the “bear necessities” of life that we all understand. Whether we’re talking porridge, chairs, or bedding, “good enough” is never good enough. Things have to be just right.

Cold porridge is miserable. Hot porridge burns your mouth.

It has to be just right.

The same principal, though, also applies to your pillow. Especially if you — or your partner — suffer from snoring or sleep apnea.

How come?

The average person’s trachea, i.e. windpipe, is just 0.6 to 0.8 inches wide. That’s about the same diameter as a garden hose.

Next time you’re watering the plants, and you step over the hosepipe or kink it around a corner, just remember that your windpipe is no wider.

Whether you’re eating porridge, sitting on a chair, or trying to sleep, this tiny space is the only means your lungs has to get the oxygen it needs to keep you alive. When your airway gets “kinked”, you struggle to breathe.
